The Mysterious Side of Krk
Krk culture isn’t just about history books or sightseeing spots. The island lives through its stories and myths passed down from generation to generation.
Some speak of golden sheep, others of strange creatures in the woods, and some are tied to numbers and names you’ll still see on maps today.
When you stay with Hoteli Krk, you’re not only close to the beaches and restaurants, you’re in the center of where these stories began.
The Legend of Prabik and the Forest Creatures
This old folk tale, now mostly forgotten, comes from the forests of Krk. It tells of Prabik, also known as Bakodlak, a huge creature who attacked villagers and livestock at dusk.
At night, the forests were said to be full of strange beings: laughing forest dwarfs called Malyći, dancing fairies in white dresses who flew on winged horses, and storm sorcerers who floated through the skies.
The Malyć is a curious figure in local folklore, somewhere between a dwarf and an elf, similar to the red-hatted Nordic gnomes or the famous Irish leprechauns.
Capturing a Malyć is said to bring great fortune, and in some stories, even sudden wealth. To this day, legends persist of certain families becoming rich after mysterious whispers were heard in the woods, especially those on Krk, which is considered the Malyći's primary habitat.
Witches also appeared, growling in the dark, attacking children and stealing hearts. The legend is known in Bašćanska Draga, Kornić, and Dobrinj, and even lives on in the stars, where the constellation Boötes is still called Bakodlak, and the Hyades are remembered as Malyći.
The Number Seven and the Island’s Destiny
Since ancient times, people have believed that Krk’s destiny is connected to the number seven.
The island was settled by Croats in the 7th century. It survived seven pirate attacks. The seventh Frankopan noble was the last Prince of Krk.
And even today, the island has seven main centres. For locals, it’s more than a coincidence, it’s part of what gives Krk its strength and identity.
